Video of NBI 2009

Chelsea Green out out a video montage of the Natural Building Intensive 2009 project.

It's a nice reminder of timber framing and plaster work (my two favorite activities) and how I miss them.

Week Twelve: Final intensive week

In our last week we finished up a lot of carpentry projects and some stone work: window trim, window bench seat, live edge siding and stone window sills.

In the second part of the week we did finish plaster and clay paint before a whirlwind cleanup and open house on Friday followed by our graduation ceremony.

After a deep cleaning before the open house guests arrived and touched the fresh plaster walls a little too much...

It was a great summer and a great project! There may be some follow up posts, but the program is done and we've all gone back to our lives outside the Yesterworld- finishing/starting school, old and new jobs, job hunting and farming.

Week Eleven: Stone Masonry (part 2)

We actually made a fireplace and chimney and finished it with plaster in 1 week (we even started after lunch on Monday, so more like 4.5 days!) Go us, and it looks great!

The bottom part of the fireplace- with a curve to complement and circumnavigate the window in the waddle and daub wall.

The waterfall I did where the fireplace and bench meet

That's me, plastering up the chimney!

Al pretzeled his way into the tight spot behind the beam

At the end of the day we cleaned up, had some beer and tested the fireplace- it worked (but of course!). It drew really well straight up the chimney.

This is on top of the roof- when the mortar has set a bit then the large cap stone will be placed on top (it's really heavy so it would have just squeezed out all the fresh mortar.

Random Vermont part 2

We finally saw a moose this morning on the way to the site!

I saw a double rainbow over the forest to the East of the school

We had a nice night hanging out at the hostel, drinking fantastic mojitos!

A little party (disco in the Quonset Hut!) to celebrate Ace's birthday... totally worth a rough Tuesday morning!

Week Eleven: Stone Masonry

We're building a Rumsford fireplace! In the first two days we have already nearly finished the stone bench that is built along side it.

The lintel was precast a couple weeks ago, here it is in place with some support.

We're also doing a bit of stone landscaping, a path to the front door. Here Tyler is helping to set the veneer stones at the doorway.

Week Ten: Super Insluation and Intensive week

We had a classroom day learning about super insulation which also included a lot of building science. Fascinating and important stuff- wish it was covered in more depth in architecture school!

We also spent the week preparing the building for blown-in cellulose insulation (there will be a guest blogger in the near future as I was absent for that). The straw clay and waddle and daub interior walls were also beautifully finished.
